Minimum official definitions for national weather service on heat and cold waves take into consideration the whole country:
heat wave - maximum temperature is 30°C and more 2 days in row at least everywhere on 30 % of the country's territory
cold snap - minimum temperature is -30°C and less 2 days in row at least everywhere on 30 % of the country's territory.

But if to talk not the whole country but a particular station the situation is called a heat wave if there has been at least 5 consecutive days with maximum temperatures of 30 c degrees

Here in Southern Nevada a cold snap is pretty amusing b/c anything below 40 degrees and everyone is freaking out. On the heat side it takes a good amount, I would say 110 degrees before we have a heat warning. All you have to do now is "wait for it" here will come the "but it's a dry heat" argument.

A heatwave for Perth is defined by the Australian Bureau of Meteorology as 3 or more consecutive days above 35C/95F. Almost always occurs at least once per summer.

There is no definition for a cold wave as far as I know (a max temperature of less than 10C/50F has only occurred a handful of times in Perth's recorded history), however cold nights are defined as a minimum below 5C/41F and cold days a maximum below 15C/59F.

Yep! I've felt 37 in the UK by day before though... But that's a nice and mild temp!
In contrast, my bro out in Aus knows what a real heatwave is... went inland of Queensland for a time and temps were well in the mid 40s... Not in that I've experienced mid 40s in Grease and Spain before... The UK probably hasn't had a proper heatwave since like 1540 or something!

In the UK. 30C hit twice in the Portsmouth area this year... Pretty poor really, but still nicer than av July with an av of 25 this year! Could have done with a record high max and min though... Would like to feel what 40c/25 day would be like in the UK, and what the moaning Brits will have to say about it, and me saying this is lovely - try Australia!

Yeah, July was really good. You had a good June, we a terrible. August was terrible there, but the first two weeks good here, then only terrible. We did break the August record with 0.2C (32.6C vs 32.4C), so that is something worth mentioning. One more record I have experienced.

I don't really know if the 25C low would do any good after a 40C high, it's still a 15C difference and would feel coolish.

Well, spouse... But in Early August last year think we had one night with a low of 20 degrees one day, and being in an Air-cooled Weatherspoons pub it felt very warm and humid outside... Love it when the nights outside are warmer than inside!

LOL, not possible here, as our houses and flats are so insulated that it's almost always hotter inside. My flat was hovering at 27-28C from July to late August. And Finland and AC? Only malls are AC's.

Our outside highest lows were 20.9C, 20.1C, 20.0C, 19.8C and 19.7C this summer, and it didn't help to cool down much... I like summer heat, but our insulation is a bit too good during a warm summer.

Look at these lows in the southern tip of Finland in July-August:
Synop report summary

17 nights above 20C, 9 in a row.
