How the hell did Reagan International manage to stay at 20F while Dulles was at 2F? UHI? Cloud cover?
Actual low was 19F at 06:47; Sustained winds of at least 5 mph throughout the night, UHI, and less snow cover than Dulles, despite what the CLI report may tell you. Dulles' local bowl topography also helps with radiative cooling; although you can't see it in this map, elevations rise back above 100 m to the east of Dulles in Fairfax County. Dulles' high of 47F today makes for a daily spread of 45F, something that's not been seen since 29 Feb 2004 and used to be separated by 3 years at most.
Recently had a larger spread between the two airports, 18F on 24 Feb, for largely the same reasons. The spread has been as large as 24F historically, but I'm not going to bother checking hourly reports on those days.
Positive PNA now being shown by the models in medium range, which if true would likely mean longer duration of warm spell for eastern CONUS (beyond next week)
Also MJO signal indicating very strongly phase 7
Phase 7 (and phase 8, but not for east) typically supports warm Midwest during March
I don't believe it. Why? Those ocean temps.
George, I know you want a warm Spring and Summer, but until those crazy Pacific ocean temps off the west coast change we will go right back to ridging in the west and trough in the east. I don't think those temps will change for a few years as they seem locked in stone. We are looking at cold winters and cool summers for the foreseeable future. Get used to cool summers in Chicago. It will be a long time till you get a summer you like.
I guess the positive side of this winter was that it taught me to REALLY appreciate summer. You can bet your ass Im NEVER going to take warm weather for granted ever again, even if it's 100 degrees outside, because I've seen with my own eyes how horrible the alternative is. Any time I find myself breaking a sweat in the summer heat, my mind will think back to this February of Horrors, and I'll forget all about it. You could compare this winter with a really horrible relationship, full of shouting, anger, lies, broken promises, and once you exit that horrible relationship, you just feel like your eyes have been opened to the world
Did you live thru the 1980's lol?
Sounds like you didn't. These past two winters can't compare to the 1980's. Winters were colder and summers were cooler. The avg winter min temp at Central Park from 1977 to 1989 was 3F, while from 1990 to 2015 the average is 8F. Five times between 1977-1989 the temp at Central Park went down to 0F or below. It has only happened once since 1990. That is a huge difference and I doubt it can be explained by any change in the UHI. The late 70's and 1980's were bizarrely cold in the eastern US.

Well for here, last month was the coldest on record. Jan 2004 was in the top ten coldest months for Central Park on record, though last month may have knocked it off. Warszawa's in upstate NY, where last month was also record breaking or tied.

More true for ensuring cold than normal winters. There have been plenty of hot summers here with positive PDO in the North Pacific. Summer position of jet stream is further north. Our summers are more influenced by moisture levels of soil.
Ok check out that summer. July was a scorcher here.... So was June. Even 107F on the 1st!! August had overall normal temps but with several very hot days.

and more recently July 1995 we saw insane heat here (and you did too) even with positive anomalies over the North Pacific

Yeah my town had its coldest February ever, and it's not even close. I checked and only January 1977 was colder, by a fraction of a degree. It was -11 celsius average this February. Im from Moscow (NOT the one in Idaho either) where average January is -8, and average February is -9. Upstate NY is a lot windier than Moscow. So even by Russian standards this February was rough

17.4°C/63.3°F in oskarshamn on the east coast according to vackertväder. several unofficial stations in the surrounding are also having temperatures of around 17°C. lets see if this is verified by smhi. the station isn't on ogimet. very extreme for being 8th of march. and we've not reached the warmest part of the day yet...
