I've read several threads debating whether or not Nantucket is more oceanic or continental. While I don't have anything additional to add, I thought it would be fun to evaluate the climate of a hypothetical island, much farther out into the ocean but still within several hundred miles of the Mass coast.

This hypothetical island is called Kelvin Island. Located about 380 miles off the New England coast (due east of Cape May, NJ and due south of Halifax, NS) this location is at least partly based on a real geographic spot...there is a seamount here called Kelvin Seamount.

I've downloaded a very neat app called Dark Sky onto my iPhone. One of the things you can do is input coordinates from anywhere in the world and it will spit out current weather conditions and the forecast.

Here are the current conditions for Kelvin Island at 11:02 PM EST:

Partly Cloudy, 56 Degrees and falling

And the seven day forecast:

Saturday: Rain, High 59, Low 56
Sunday: Rain, High 57, Low 55
Monday: Partly Cloudy, High 60, Low 57
Tuesday: Partly Cloudy, High 63, Low 60
Wednesday: Rain, High 66, Low 62
Thursday: Rain, High 62, Low 54
Friday: Rain, High 57, Low 66

The coordinates are 38° 49′ 34.2″ N, 63° 59′ 52.8″ W.

So...what do you think of this climate? Seems very much like the Azores (though a bit rainier) -- would be neat to have an island like this within a one hour flight of most of the east coast cities!

You can't really judge a climate by a 7 day forecast.

This climate more or less already exists - Sable Island in Nova Scotia and it's nothing like the Azores...
