Big waves on the lake tonight

https://twitter.com/MikeHamernik

This storm will make the #2 for snow during the month of February behind the Groundhog's Day Blizzard

The list is from the official station in Chicago since 1885.

Quote:
Heaviest February Snow Storms
1885-2014
All storms of 10.0″ or greater

The snow storm currently in progress will probably enter the list as February’s 2nd greatest.

1. 20.2″ Feb 1-2, 2011 (22.0" at MDW)
2. 13.4″ Feb 6-7, 1895
3. 12.5″ Feb 3-4, 1896
4. 12.8″ Feb 18-19, 1908
5. 12.9″ Feb 9-10, 2010
6. 12.7″ Feb 6-7, 1933
7. 12.2″ Feb 3-4, 1901
8. 12.0″ Feb 12-13, 1896
9. 11.5″ Feb 29-Mar 1, 1900
10. 11.2 Feb 10-11, 1981
11. 11.1″ Feb 18, 2000
12. 10.8″ Feb 12-13,1894
13. 10.3″ Feb 6.7, 1978
14. 10.2″ Feb 12-13, 2007
15. 10.1″ Feb 8-9, 1885

Don't know how much we will end up with... 16-18 inches? Maybe more in spots?

850mb temps with metars update & Radar. 9:40pm.

Its raining in Pittsburgh & DC. Poor Pittsburgh cant even catch a break!

Look how far north the 4500' level is warming up. North of Pittsburgh! But still south of DC.
Purely driven by the storms counter clockwise rotation drawing up warm air but amazing staying put on the coastal plain!

Reason why DC is getting rain and north of that freezing line is because their surface temp is 39°F.

I have a dusting here.

In case you missed it, SPC outlined the area concerning heavy snow tonight. http://www.spc.noaa.gov/products/md/md0052.html

Quote:
AREAS AFFECTED...SRN AND WRN NY...NRN PA..NRN NJ...WRN CT...FAR SW
MA

CONCERNING...HEAVY SNOW

VALID 020252Z - 020845Z

SUMMARY...HEAVY SNOW IS FORECAST TO DEVELOP ACROSS SRN NY...NRN PA
EXTENDING EWD INTO SWRN NEW ENGLAND DURING THE LATE EVENING AND
OVERNIGHT PERIOD. SNOWFALL RATES SHOULD REACH 1 INCH PER HOUR WITH
LOCALLY HIGHER RATES POSSIBLE.

DISCUSSION...THE LATEST WATER VAPOR IMAGERY SHOWS AN UPPER-LEVEL
TROUGH OVER THE LOWER TO MID MS VALLEY WITH A LEAD SHORTWAVE TROUGH
EVIDENT OVER THE UPPER OH VALLEY EXTENDING SWD INTO THE SRN AND
CNTRL APPALACHIAN MTNS. AT THE SFC...A 1000 MB LOW IS LOCATED OVER
SWRN OH WITH A QUASI-STATIONARY FRONTAL BOUNDARY EXTENDING ENEWD
ACROSS CNTRL OH AND CNTRL PA. WIDESPREAD PRECIPITATION IS ONGOING
ALONG THE AXIS OF A 50 TO 65 KT LOW-LEVEL JET FROM ERN OH SWD ACROSS
WV. THIS PRECIPITATION WILL OVERSPREAD A SUB-FREEZING AIRMASS
ALREADY LOCATED ACROSS THE MCD AREA. AS THIS OCCURS...ISENTROPIC
LIFT IS FORECAST TO MARKEDLY INCREASE AS THE LOW-LEVEL JET SHIFTS
EWD WITH THE APPROACHING SHORTWAVE TROUGH. THE LATEST RADAR TRENDS
SUGGEST THAT A BAND OF MODERATE SNOW IS SETTING UP FROM WRN AND SRN
NEW YORK. THIS WILL LIKELY BE THE PREFERRED CORRIDOR FOR THE
HEAVIEST SNOWFALL RATES LATE THIS EVENING INTO THE OVERNIGHT PERIOD.
SNOWFALL RATES SHOULD INCREASE TO AROUND AN INCH PER HOUR BUT COULD
BE LOCALLY HIGHER WITHIN THE HEAVIEST PARTS OF THE BANDS.
