I was curious about something....so I ran the numbers.... Boston, Massachusetts.
I felt like we been having some well above normal snowfalls lately but with above normal temps.
Well........ For December, January, February, March period only... Here's a look at the departures from normal. Avg temp is 33.4°. Avg Snowfall is 40.6".
Past 20 yrs there's been 12 above normal temp yrs, 8 above normal snowfalls. BUT ......
Only 1 of those 8 yrs had above normal temps.(2013). The rest had below normal temps going against my thinking. Maybe it's just for here and Boston is a bad example? Strange.
2014-15 was nuts.
Prior to 1930s there were 9 winters (& March) which ended up 4 or more below normal. More above normal snowfall years recent decade though. Which is why I found it strange only 1 yr was with above normal temps.
Check this out. The 6.4" of snow that fell 2 days ago is not only the earliest on record for NYC but it made 2018 the smallest gap between 6" Snow events.
Looking at 4" event differences... 4 of the Top 9 happened in past 15 yrs.
Islip got 4.3" snow 2 days ago. Earliest 4"+ on record and since the last 4" snowfall was April 2nd, The gap between Last 4" snow and First is the smallest in 2018.
And take note... 9 of the Top 15 came in the last 15 yrs!

It seems like we got our first ice day (high below freezing) early in Bowling Green, KY this year, so I decided to investigate. (Dates on or after Jam 1 technically fell in the following year)

2nd earliest out of the 27 winters I’ve lived through, quite early but not terribly unusual given the large number of early December dates.

*I live near Pershore, but Pershore stayed foggy and freezing all day whilst it was sunny where I live and highs reached 9.7°C. I happened to be in Worcester nearby which was also foggy all day. As a result there were no ice days where I live in 2015/16.
The coldest December 14 on record in Pershore had a high of 1.4°C in 1987. This Friday could be the coldest December 14 since that date, and if it is cloudy all day it could be beaten.
