^ I got curious about Madison, WI (data 1948-2012)

There are 3 days that have never hit 90 or 32: June 2, June 5, September 21. May 17 (86/32) and September 25 (84/32) are the only days that haven't gone above 30C or below 0C.

There's a few days that have a range (record max-record min) of 50 degrees or less, between Jun 28 and Aug 22. July 18th has the lowest range at 47 degrees (94/47). There's also a few days that have a range of 80 days or more, between Jan 11 and April 7. The highest is March 1st at 90 degrees (+61, -29), the b

April 7 (0) has a lower record low than March 11th (+3). The record high is 82 on March 15, 83 on March 21, 76 on April 13th, and 83 on May 6th, though 90s have happened in April.

What does early snow mean for winter? Nothing. lol

"Historically, early snowfalls do not indicate what the subsequent winter will bring".

Interesting.

To date Chicago 2nd snowiest on record, last year same period Bangor 3rd snowiest, 2 years ago Rapid City 2nd snowiest.

Wonder who will it be next year with the big early season snowstorms.

Just remembered. Hartford had their snowiest in 2011 so added them to the graphic.

^Oymyakon's most intense cold snap during the past 15 years was from mid January to early February 2002.

It hit -84F (-65C) on Feb 1st, 2002. That's it's monthly record for February. The previous month never got above -37F (see data for January 2002).

Here's Feb 2002:

The winter of 1931-32 was extremely mild in Raleigh.
Every month except March had an average high above 60 and an average low below 40, and only 5 days through the end of February had lows below freezing! Normally, December, January, and February all have average highs in the 50s and lows in the lower 30s. The average number of lows below freezing through the end of February is 50.
That November tied for warmest on record, December and January were second warmest on record, and February was fifth warmest on record.
However, March was cooler than average, with 10 freezes and 3.3" of snow.

Here are the November-February temperature anomalies for the country.
