I remember one year in Denver, CO, it rained most of the summer and was sunnier in winter. I remember that happened in Montana one year as well. So sometimes, possibly yes.

Yeah I would really like to know that. It's interesting that New Orleans has only 47% sunshine in January, much cloudier than summer.

Ah I see...I thought something off...

In here, summer and winter is as cloudy/sunny. It depends on the year really.

Though spring is usually very sunny.

A few Australian sites where summer is cloudier:

(Spr, Sum, Aut and Win % in that order, from astronomically possible daylight - not necessarily all measurable for sun recording):

Brisbane 69 61 64 71
Cairns 69 53 56 67
Darwin 75 49 71 88

NZ also has examples from locations at about 43-45 S.

On the Southern California coastline, surprisingly the rainless summers can be cloudier than winters due to the marine layer which can hang in there until noon or even later. During some La Nina summers, it can even persist all day for several days a time (summer of 2010).

No most places would have a summer maximum in sunshine, whilst many locations have higher summer rainfall, often they're still cloudier during winter even when you don't take into account the shorter days. Distinct winter sunshine maximums usually occur in monsoonal climates that have dry winters.

There are significant exceptions, as I and others have already pointed out.

In some places yes. Bit not in most places. Here the summer is very sunny. We can have weeks in a row with no clouds in the sky. :P Especially at the islands. In continental regions of North and Central Greece we can have some brief thunderstorms and that 's all. Then the sky is clear again.

I guess it depends on what you mean by "clouds" - does fog/marine layer count? If so then spring and fall here are sunnier than both summer and winter. In summer we have fog nearly every day and some days it never burns off, whereas in spring, fall, and even in winter we can have cloudless skies from sunrise to sunset for days at a time.

Noticed the NSB wiki chart has a sun column. The other data is just copied from Daytona (what's the point?) and I don't know where the hell these sun hours come from. I don't buy it, the same number in August as in May sounds crazy.

This map shows that the east coast is cloudier than the west in June, but unfortunately I can't find other months. Then again this doesn't match the WMO data for some cities, so I don't know what to think.
