Anchorage has milder winters then one might imagine because the city is located near the Pacific Ocean.
Duluth has rather severe winters, and is often windy. Summer weather in that area is excellent because the temperatures are moderated by Lake Superior.
I voted Chicago, but really any major city bordering the Great Lakes or the Atlantic Ocean (in New England states) I would say have the worst winter weather. Part of the reason I choose these areas is because of the variation in weather phenomena that occur throughout the winter. Not only do many areas receive an abundance of snowfall, but they are also prime candidates for both arctic cold fronts and warm plumes of air from the Gulf. Not many places elsewhere in the country get two feet of snow and then two days worth of rain on top of it. Didn't Chicago (and much of this region) get thunderstorms just a few days ago? I know thunderstorms aren't particularly common this time of year, but they occur. I do know rain is not uncommon on top of snow and, at least for me, that's just one giant mess and highly undesirable. I also like to see the sun more than 4 times a month.
However, my current town of Milwaukee is omitted from the list and shouldn't be. Also, Buffalo should be on there. Milwaukee for the cold-wind combo primarily with still quite a bit of snow, and Buffalo for the legendary heaps of snow.
However, Milwaukee is like the Sun Belt in the winter compared to Minneapolis!
Good points EnjoyEP... where is Buffalo? Buffalo gets more snow in one year than we get in 3-4 years sometimes. And how on earth is Chicago tied for Anchorage? LOL I can see people dont really know much about Chicago's winters. For instance, we're just experiencing our first sub-zero temps of the year, whereas Anchorage and other cities have had MANY. We also had 65 degrees the other day too. LOL I think the winter snowfall in Chicago is also low compared to many areas.
Chicago. Get's miserably cold but is too warm to consistently snowmobile, snowshoe, cross country ski etc. Winter in Chicago seems pretty pointless.
