Auxerre is inland away from the ocean. NYC also experiences humid heat which makes it more difficult to reach above 100F
I looked at Auxerre's data from 2003 on wunderground. The data they present doesn't show 7 straight days above 40C. Are they wrong? More importantly, look at how low the dew points were. That would allow for higher temps.

Yes, in july 2012 for example the heat wave doesn't have really affected NYC but Chicago, Philadelphia, Washington D.C., Saint Louis... was very affected.

St Louis I can see getting a week straight of 40C+ temps. I doubt DC, or Philly
Chicago consecutive record heat is from the Dust Bowl, when drought lowered dew points and allowed for more extreme temps
July 1934 Chicago/Midway had 5 days in a row of 40C+
And a detailed look at that heat wave from the closest NWS station to my house (Kankakee). We had 5 days of 40C+ but not consecutive
