We had an unseasonably warm and dry Winter so it's not a surprise that the Spring is about the same as Winter was, temperature wise.

What do you weather geeks make of this??
You're 2nd link goes to January 2014 but I used January 2015..

Left is May 2015. Right is January 2015. Average Max temps.

First few are the warmest locations for the entire state. Last few is the coldest.

Obviously January would have colder numbers but yeah.. Los Angeles had a colder Max Avg in May then in January.

However, the Average Monthly temp was not colder in May compared to January.

Guess would be good to point out that when you're inside a ridge lately, we're getting heated. Inside the trough and it's cold.

We're having one of the warmest May's on record on this side, something California had in January.

Los Angeles(LAX)
4th Warmest February.
11th Coldest May so far

Hartford(BDL)
Coldest February
4th Warmest May so far

Just the way the Jet stream rolls. Been seeing this flip flop all the time since following weather.

Here's the mean Jet Stream for February on left, May on right.

Whats funny is May doesn't look impressive for the Northeast. Further strengthening my idea that the dry ground did indeed help spike temps more than it should of.

In the May depiction, that jet stream should be flat from south central TX to S. Carolina. A zonal flow with two jets, the sub arctic and the mid latitude going west to east in parallel over the central continent, has prevailed. Both are sluggish. The sub tropical jet on the other hand, has been persistently stronger, almost "pineapple express" from southeast of Hawaii to central Mexico to south TX. An unusual pattern for May. But I've seen it before.

The cold they are getting now is nothing at all comparable to the cold we got lol.

The world would turn upside down if we ever had a May colder than January.

What do I make of May being warmer than January in LA?......Meh. Would be very interesting in a 4-seasonal climate though. Though I really doubt it's possible.
