Hmm, that would still be very cold for subtropical standards though. Also cold for Oceanic standards. Out of all three, it appears closest to continental for me though. A high seasonal variety is always a key factor for me, the difference between relatively cold winters and warm summers. It does take a while to warm up though, so i'd say it is an ocean influenced continental climate
It looks like most of you agree with my opinion that it's mostly continental. The 20-25 inches (51-60cm) of snow Montauk gets in winter definitely definitely don't seem too subtropical but they also aren't reminiscent of an oceanic climate. There is definitely heavy moderation during the winter though which can be seen by this map.
put Montauk another 30 miles out to sea it will be just like oceanic climates in Europe at that latitude or even subtropical.
(hence both of these locations have reduced affects of the gulf stream and increased influence from continental air masses)
it would not be like a typical coastal city in western European. it would still have too much continental influence due to the prevailing winds coming from the North American continent. and also due to the erratic ocean currents (often missing the gulf stream)
you would need to be a good 500+ miles from the mainland in order to be properly oceanic (like Bermuda's distance ~640 miles)

As I said, the temperatures are more similar to a central european location than to a coastal one. The cold winters (though not frigid) and warm summers (though not tropical) make it think so. However, the relatively high rainfall is more similar to a western maritime coastal location.
All in all, I think it is a good, pleasant climate with well defined seasons and interesting weather.
If you compare to European continental/oceanic hybrids, Montauk doesn't have a small seasonal or range variation at all.
For me it's still a continental climate.
