Records as in absolute records or monthly records ? (I believe you would not bother mentioning it if they were just daily records)
Absolute records. There were some monthly records broken too, but not yesterday. Daily records have been getting broken almost every day this July (Split has broken its daily record six days in a row, I believe).
I notice some of those places are a long way apart. Where in Italy would you expect to get the hottest summer temperatures, or does it all depend on which direction the heat is coming from? Your topography makes things more complicated than in England.
Topography plays a large role. I would expect the highest temps to be in the internal valleys of Sicily, Calabria and Central Italy. All the place i have listed share this characteristic and some of them aren't even that far from each other. Poggio a Caiano and Sesto Fiorentino are only a few kilometers from each other, they are also in the Firenze metropolitan area and are affected by the heat island. Catenanuova and Assoro are only a few kilometers from each other and in the same valley and the same goes for Casteldilago, Sant'Anatolia and Amelia.
Holy cow!, could we agree that this is "the reading" of the summer for the northern hemisphere?
32C°/39C° in Grottaglie yesteday is almost as impressive, especially for the low which probably sets an Italian (and maybe European?) record

It's also due to its topography, while Palermo's and Catania's climates are mitigated by the presence of the sea, Catenanuova is in a valley quite far from the sea and surrounded by hills/mountains on three sides, that means it often gets more extreme temps than the rest of the island.
I have a few doubts on the weather station too but if it overreads it isn't by much given that there's another weather station in the same valley which has similar temps.
