Central California has non-stop sunshine (odd for the wettest time of year) and warm temperatures for them for winter. San Francisco has a high 70°F forecast today; Big Sur 120 miles to the south 79°F. Reminiscent of last winter. The stuck trough is not necessarily a good pattern for snow — it pulls storm to far to the south and brings cold dry air in the interior

A bit ironic since Montreal has gotten less snow this season than places like New York City.

For NYC, with much longer daylight in winter, and being as close to Carcass as Helsinki is to the geographical North Pole, it's a damn more easier to get a severe cold spell quite normal to the latitude, than for NYC at the latitude of Naples. On 7 January in Helsinki the sun doesn't warm at all on ground, but today NYC had the same sun angle as Helsinki has on 30 March.
Sure, but a more oceanic climate at about 60°N, say in northern Scotland; wouldn't have the big negative swings of Helsinki, the sea buffers any cold air from the east.

To nitpick, NYC has the had the same sun angle at solar noon as Helsinki would on its solar noon on 30 March; daylength is shorter for NYC in early February so the total sunlight over the day would be quite a bit less, though still a lot higher than Helsinki currently.

Either way, even at 40° in winter the sun is still weak. The heat received by atmospheric transport from other locations is larger than anything the sun; but by April the sun is no longer weak but at least northern New England is still rather cold — leaf out is barely any earlier here than for you. Takes a while to warm up, though by late April temperatures rise fast and it's warmer than Finland and temperatures are still rising.

Bucharest is among the most similar climates to New York City in Europe. Not an exact match, but none is perfect.

Some snow accumulated in the grass this morning. It was coming down rather heavily at times.

as bad as this looks it doesn't look 2015 bad in terms of lowest min for Raleigh, according to the forecasts, but it looks equally as bad in Maryland then worse once your north. Unless ecmwf is showing something I did not see, but I dont have access to that report thing you do from ecmwf that shows the temps. 3 years of extreme low temps.... man I think we are due for some extreme winter warmth next year, what goes up must come down and vice versa. 1949-1950 looks like a nice year to me.

Finally Northeast will get bigger departures without the midwest getting them first or same time. Its aimed right at us!

Dont forget the winds too. Arctic front comes through end of week winds will be bone chilling.

Heres Buffalo discussion. Historic cold Feb airmass?

Some pretty chilly temps indeed, had it came from the west then moved east it would be no where near this cold due to it moderating over the mountains and moving back north. What are the 850s like here in Raleigh? That wind-chill will suck and it will ruin the weekend but then again it might be better as people wont have to go out. Hate bone dry cold going to have to go pick up some chapstick, out of 2 chapsticks this winter so far. Well at least it wont be snowing and since this your type of weather enjoy it I guess lol!

Though Buffalo is almost the Midwest, our departures from normal won't be as extreme.

Oddly, it's raining there; 44°F. Usually they get cold before us as weather comes from the west.

Here it's raining and 42° F. It's also odd that we're colder than Buffalo.
