God I hope not. Notice the East Coast is mainly below normal all the way up to Mass, but not further inland...

^^ The above maps are looking excellent for me. Below normal temps and above normal precip - exactly what I wanna see.

Unfortunately that is because of the precip. Not an arctic air mass type pattern.

Even though above normal in Southern Canada means 20s(I think), We really need to see them & Mid West well below normal for anyone in the East to feel arctic like. Any that comes down will moderate too much.

But again... that is a 3 month mean map.. Means nothing for a 1-4 day event or 1 months worth which can bring Arctic air in.

Ture, it could be precip induced below normal temps. But that might mean more snow right?

Unless we get that PNA to be positive and the AO negative, I have a feeling that my winter will be lame By the looks of the pattern being established this autumn (which I like right now), the PNA is going to be in a sustained negative phase. Seems as if those El Nino lows are starting to beat down that warm blob.

Hopefully we get snow and not just cold rain!

Your above average is still very, very cold, and you would end up with much colder averages than we would in a "cold" winter. I your mildest winter probably is equal to our "average" conditions lol.

Maybe. Here is Chicago's official winter temperature rankings from NWS

I checked NWS/Philly, but the layout of that web page sucks. Can't find temperature rankings. So where does our warmest stand against Philly? Still below average?

Jan mean is 33F. Dec mean is around 38F. Feb mean is around 36F. So yeah your mildest is around our avg. I can actually say I despise your winters. I can't imagine our avg conditions being called "mildest" ever.

Well you are a couple of degrees latitude further south than we are, and more importantly on the coast. I'm actually not a great fan of our winters either.... I'd much rather have South Dakota's

Bastardi believes that Northwest Europe is in for a cold winter

Weather Bell's winter severity index relative to the norms. Basically an average winter here. DC, Philly, maybe up to NYC may see a lot of action this winter.
