Here is nearby Derry, for some comparison.

As you can see, this place averages 27 air frosts each winter, so the supposed 50-60 air frosts for a nearby poster seems very dubious to say the least.

The Castlederg data says 48 air frosts / winter and it's official data. The Derry station (Ballykelly) faces the water and is likely unrepresentative of further inland.

But Castlederp is one of the coldest stations in N.I (& holds the record for lowest ever temp) so isn't representative of the rest of N.I either...

Yet Owen apparently is much colder than that station. He says that he averages 6C/0.5C in January. Which is actually quite a lot colder than Castlederp.

Thing is how can he have accurate averages anyway? LTA's are from a dataset of a 30 year period, not 2 or 3 years that he has had a thermometer stuck too low down on his back fence...

Here's a comparison between the pole of cold that is Castlederg, and other UK stations for air frosts.

Castlederg 48
Bournemouth Airport 60
York 54
Heathrow 32
Solent 22
Redesdale camp 79
Aboyne 86
Braemar 101
Norwich(where Owen is going to uni) 45

Castlederg is pretty mild really. I think -6C will be the minimum there this winter.

Here's how the SE US compares:

I'm surprised Tennessee, Kentucky or Arkansas aren't on it.

Is it possible most stations are close to the water and inland locations poorly covered?
