To nitpick, you should use urban areas instead, metro areas go by county lines which for the outer counties include rural land. Still, the NYC urban area is 8900 square km or 2/3rds the size of Northern Ireland.

JFK airport is 14 miles from Lower Manhattan, and for most of the way there it's quite built up even for the standards of European cities.
