I was surprised too at the "low" number. But they apparently need living space. An underground colony found in Japan had some 310 million ants, but it covered 670 acres.

The pile is around 2m high. Experts believe it has taken decades to build, and houses approximately 500,000-600,000 ants. Crazy!
