Origonal source is Breitbart, which got it from a border control agent. I'd be less skeptical if it weren't just reported on a right-wing news source; but of course it could be true.
The left-wing media wouldn't be so quick to publish such a story, of course. It doesn't go so well with their open borders, pro-illegal agenda. Breitbart is fairly credible.

And even if it didn't happen, are liberals really so naive to think the porous border they support doesn't create such vulnerabilities?

They think the risk is really low; I'm rather skeptical myself. There are plenty of other simpler ways to sneak in; if you're a European national, anyone that's not on the no-fly list can get in easily.

I can't speak on the credibility of Breitbart, but I don't see anything wrong with waiting for additional credible sources to come forward. But as of right now this story just screams "agenda", 8 Syrians sneaking into the U.S. via Mexico? Really?
Border Control said 8 Syrians did enter the US, but they didn't sneak, they presented themselves at the official border crossing. A wall would have no effect.
By the way, I've noticed the further you get from the Mexican border, the more people tend to worry about immigration. In West Texas, Mexicans "illegally" cross the border all the time to sell goods to tourists at Big Bend National Park. The Border Patrol just looks the other way. Meanwhile, in wealthy Fairfield County, CT, people are advocating building a giant dome over this country like in that Stephen King novel.

I wonder why they were arrested, the article didn't mention any reason. Seems ridiculous, but I'll wait until more information is released.
