I can't agree with this proposed scenario, because while virtually everyone experiences 40C as extreme heat, most people do not view 0C as extreme cold. It is cold, but not that cold. The fact that both temps are mathematically equally far from the "ideal" does not seem to be relevant in this case.

I've actually done that once! I didn't have high quality arctic winter clothing at the time, just typical department store stuff so it was uncomfortably cold. One time I did go out with proper arctic gear at -35 (with -45 windchill) for nearly an hour and that wasn't bad. With the proper clothing it's definitely doable.

As far as this scenario goes, if it was 40C at the pool for 30 minutes to an hour I would certainly take that over the -40 option, but 3 hours is a bit long to be out in that heat and sun even with a nice cool pool. In that particular case I think I'd rather have 20 minutes of cold than 3 hours of heat.

On that note, am I the only person here who's experienced -40? Seems like most people on this forum haven't even hit -30.

Hiromant has experienced -35C (he's said it once). Not sure about others, but I think Arctic Gardner would have too?

No, a few people on here have experienced -40. JetsNHL used to live in Winnipeg and travel around Manitoba, and I remember him once saying that walking around in -30C didn't feel too bad with his jacket. There's also one infrequent poster who lives in Saskatoon. And a mod who lives in Northern ND (Woodrow). And warptman who lives in AK. Then there're posters like Kaul who don't show up anymore.

I'm sure many on here including myself have seen -30; that's not so extreme...

I don't think Kaul had seen -40°C, can't remember his posts that well, but he didn't give any evidence of actually living in a cold climate. I think he was living in Texas or the deep south.

Myself? Once, briefly early in the morning. And I live in a colder climate than many posters.
