Yes but do you see the cold upwelling occurring along the PNW? That wasn't there the last few winters. To me that warm blob seems a bit further west. I wonder if that will play a role?
From your buddy Bastardi the cool waters off the PNW disappear soon and warm ring will be back.
His latest blog blurb (and he is referring to the blob):
"ITS BAAAAAACK
THE N Pac warm pool. The cool off the west coast will disappear as the modeling is strongly supporting the warm ring. In any case it will come on premium after it sinks in to clients . I think we got a fun winter coming"
In any case, I look forward to seeing Muslim guy deal with the cold that will visit the Southeast this winter. If this holds up, count on very big negative departures in the Southeast and East yet again, and deadly damage to all the healing palm trees down there which got a small reprieve in 2016.
George, yes it was there in 2014. Go back and look at SST maps. That blob is in the exact same spot as 2014. And yes the blue anomalies right along the shoreline were there as well. We need the blob gone to have a big old Aleutian low all winter long like it is supposed to do. Where the heck has that typical winter Aleutian low been?
Um no it was not. You go back and check.
No blue ring on the coast, and the the blob was closer to the coast. Now we have a blue ring and the warm waters are further west (also not as warm)

It will be interesting seeing the Aleutian Ridge and Southeast Ridge sort of go back and forth this winter, both are strong. Wonder if that will mean a cold Midwest, warm west and warm east.
Bastardi seems convinced it's gonna be brutal, if this happens the mid Atlantic will be well above average on snow for 4 years in a row which is insane.4 freaking years in a row! Something has to give. I wonder why this pattern keeps reasserting itself. https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/...ss_tw#comments

George, no comment on Bastardi claiming the cool ring of water off the PNW will disappear and the warm ring will be back which will look exactly like 2014? Why no comment on his claim? I gave you an exact quote from his blog.

The article states the closest analog is 1995/96 winter. Say hello to 0F at Raleigh while Philly went to 3F. How did that happen? Charleston, SC 16F which should kill of quite a few Washingtonia Robusta's and CIDP and lots of citrus.

What may happen isn't what I was arguing. I am showing you the difference between the SST's this August and last August. There are obvious differences right now. You stated that the SST set up is the same now as it was then. Not the case. Will the blue ring disappear? I hope so, and you know why.

Last August? I said the SST in 2014 match now not 2015.

Mobile, AL dropped to 11F. Enough said.
You are quite an alarmist tom. Even if this is an analog does not mean things will play out that way. You have a higher chance of going to 0 so don't know why you are trying to scare me. Come by this winter I bet you it's going to be warm down south this winter, just look at that southeast Ridge it can't just disappear without major changes.
