January 1977, February 2015, January 2004, February 1979, January 1994, December 1989, January 1982, February 1978, January 1981, and January 1971 were the coldest months ever here in Binghamton. Crazy how half of the coldest months on record happened in a very small, six-year time span between 1977 and 1982
From NWS Central PA. Impressive. Been 3 decades since having this type of air mass in May
Quote:
Weather conditions in central Pennsylvania over the next 24 hours will likely be the coldest until next fall. Temperature departures
will average between 15 and 25 degrees below normal on Sunday and
10 and 15 degrees below normal overnight Sunday into Monday morning.
Here is a look at the daily record low maximum and record minimum
temperatures
An extensive...broken overcast deck of strato cumulus blankets most of the CWA
early this morning...thanks to a well-aligned wnw boundary layer
flow and increasingly colder airmass streaming across the chilly
(but still relatively warmer waters of lake erie).
This is one of...if not the coldest air masses for mid may to impact our region in the past 30 years. Upstream 850 mb temps of -6 to -8C and sfc high pressure drifting to our south across the Middle Ohio River Valley and Central Appalachians over the next
24-36 hours will help to maintain widespread clouds across central
and nw penn with lake effect rain showers scattered across the
central ridge and valley region of the state...and more numerous
nocturnal snow showers/rain showers across the Allegheny Plateau
of northern and western PA. Lake Erie - 850 mb temp spread will
increase to about 16-17C for much of today.
Briefly moderate snowfall rates and morning temps in the low-mid 30s at KJST and KBFD will lead to the potential for a light coating of snow...and perhaps up to one half of and inch in a few spots
across Mckean and Potter Counties at elevations above 2200 ft
msl.
Bradford PA reporting snow now. The Latest it ever accumulated there (since 1957) is May 11, 1990 with 0.9", so this could be an extreme for them this late..
Here we go. With the temperatures at 5000' now dropped below freezing over the area, we shouldn't warm up much from where we are. Maybe 10 degrees at most.
6am temps. It's funny, I look at this and say "what's the big deal? 30s and 40s?". Then I remember it's mid May. These are below and well below normal temps down to the Gulf
The low this morning was 31.8°F (-0.1°C) this morning. That's right - it's 15 May and we saw a low below freezing. That's inexcusable. Yesterday's high was 47.8°F (8.8°C) according to my PWS, but I don't even think it got that warm, being that driving around yesterday afternoon, the car never saw anything over 44°F (7°C) on its thermometer.
And as per bloody typical, it was overcast yesterday. Our precipitation has finally struggled up to 1.00" (25.4 mm) for the month so far, which was mostly seen during subarctic tripe events like this past Wednesday when it never got above 52.0°F (11.1°C) and it rained all day. And yet it only added up to 0.4" (10 mm) on that day.
In the past week, we have seen two decent days; the rest have all been tripe. It's mid-May and we're still seeing highs in the 40s °F and drizzly poop lasting over a day on end. I thought summer was supposed to begin in three weeks.
Thankfully we have only two more days like this; we'll be around 70-72°F (21-22°C) beginning Thursday.
Radar loop and metars last 4hrs. Watch the Lake effect snows and how its snowing down into PA. Du Bois now reporting snow. Someone is seeing a white landscape for sure under that area in PA
