How close? This close

Current map Radar, 850mb temps and metars.

Strong NorEaster off the coast 982mb! Take a look at where the freezing line is at 4500'.

Keep in mind, even if that level is below freezing (or at freezing) the layers below could be warm so doesn't nescessarily mean snow.

But this goes to show you how close it was to a snowstorm. Its snowing in Binghamton right now, Ice in Concord. The ice is because there is a warm layer below 4500' which is melting the snow but because the surface is below freezing there in southern NH its Freezing Rain.

I bet you the Litchfield hills (Mt Bear) is seeing a mix rain/snow/sleet right now.

The temps are dropping and crashing but the precip is moving away.

Bad timing. If the cold air was faster or the storm slower, this would of been a 4-12" snowstorm for Southern New England.

Remember models once showed this for Sunday night? That would of been good timing. Oh well..

Another look

Snowing in Quebec with that "separate" storm there and then you have the NorEaster.

Strange winds are dead calm here.

Here is the sounding for Hartford, CT (BDL)

So basically snow is falling to about 4000 feet and then melting and is rain at the surface while it's 35°F

So the entire lower layer is above freezing. From ground to about 4000'.

Wow, I will say that we missed this by just 2000-4000 feet. Had it been below freezing from 1000' up this would of been snow.

Now what will happen is, as the cold air comes rushing in at the mid levels it will compress down to the surface and cool down the temps even more so the below freezing layer will drop lower too which means a change to snow IF there is still precip around!

Thanks!!

Nice heavy returns for Maine there. 35dbz rate of snow.

Pittsfield, Concord, Portland & others changed to snow past couple hours. I'm starting to see some accumulation reports now.

notice the precip is ending left to right so CT is going to dry out before it can change. Except for Northern tier. Snowing in Northwest part of CT right now.

Here's that Dual Poll I talked about... A radar that can detect whats rain/snow better. It uses vertical and horizontal viewing of the atmosphere and detects if the object (rain drop or snowflake) is big or small or long or round, ect.

Here's another

"Colder air changing sleet to snow. Notice how pink area is shrinking from last hour. "
