Similar to your incident. I committed the ultimate crime of mixing glossy and non glossy paper (now discontinued) and one of the staff had a go at me over it. I responded by saying that I didn't pay for him to swear at me and extracted an apology, which management felt was intimidation. I received a written ban a few days later, with the threat of a trespass order if I returned.
NYC is sorely lacking in the nature department, the best natural areas are all on the outskirts of the city. It has some nice parks, but it's not nearly enough for a city with that many people imo.
