Erm because we are all part of the EU Those from outside the EU can work in the UK, but they need a visa to do so. The whole point of the EU was free movement between close & neighbouring countries & to bring countries together after the second world war. Breaking it up is madness.

Of course they do - EU migrants pay a lot in tax to the UK coffers. They work hard and do jobs that either lazy Brits don't want to do, or aren't skilled enough to do. We in the UK sometimes forget that there is a skills shortage here - we even need to get foreign expertise on building high speed rail because we just don't have enough skilled people here to do it. We rely on these foreign workers to plug the skills gap. Without them, who knows?

Don't kid yourself into thinking that British retirees doing nothing all day in Spain are contributing vast amounts of money to the Spanish economy. Most British retirees in Spain are not loaded. A lot of Brits in Spain are holiday reps or drunks.

Why should mainland Europeans be given special status, what is so 'special' about them?

No one is disputing the benefits of immigration. What we want is a fairer system that puts everyone on a level playing field. (well what I want anyway)

Nothing really - they're just our immediate neighbours and most Brits moving abroad and going on holiday go to European countries firs and foremost.

It's logical to for the UK to have open borders with these countries given the vast amounts of movement that already exists.

Jesus wept... They are not given a "special" status, they have the exact same status as people from the UK That is the whole point of being in a united Europe!

You can travel without being in the EU. I travel to other non-EU countries frequently and it is not a problem for me.

Statistics show that 50% + of the British diaspora abroad live in Australia, America and Canada combined. It's more of a case of mainland Europeans taking advantage of the UK rather than the other way round.

e.g 790,000 Polish people live in Britain, 6,000 Brits live there.

Hopefully the only good to come from this is that we can get rid of NI.

There are over 3 million British people living elsewhere in the EU. Most of them probably don't want to come back.
