Really now?

54S https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ushuaia#Climate
55N https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copenhagen#Climate

52S https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Campbe...ealand#Climate
52N https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Utrecht#Climate

Below this latitude in the south it's tundra, the Drake Passage, the furious fifties and the screaming sixties. At my latitude in the southern hemisphere there's a polar climate.

Why southern hemisphere appear to be "superior" is that there's hardly any landmass below the 40th parallel. Or well, there is - the Antarctic.

Eh? Omyakon is on the 63rd parallel north. Maquinchao is at the latitude of Rome.

It's a cool semi-arid climate.

Continental climates in my opinion need a month where the average temp is BELOW FREEZING and NYC and Maquinchao have a combined 0 months with an average temp below freezing. Sure New York is close but it still has an average temp above freezing in its coldest month whereas 70 miles northeast, where I am, it doesn't. So it doesn't matter whether I would go by Koppen or not I would say the same thing.

A Russian drunkard who 100 years ago made a climate classification after a bottle of vodka based on very few stations with data from the Little Ice Age is not the ultimate authority on climate.

Köppen might say what he wants, but the climate, flora and fauna of NYC is humid continental.

Well who is the "ultimate authority on climate" then? If NY is continental then why is it continental if the average temps for all 12 months are above freezing.

Nobody is. NYC has all means above freezing solely because of the massive UHI. Go towards you in Stamford CT and it has two months below freezing and 100 freezes a year.

If Köppen would make his classification today, the treshold for subtropical would probably be 5C means in the coldest month.

How do you know he will?

I think it depends on perspective. Continental folk would likely see it as a climate with strong oceanic influence, and the oceanic folk, would likely see the opposite.

Polar lows travel easily in the southern hemisphere even if moderated, and westerly air flow over mountains means heating. Chuck in a steady supply of high pressure and that probably explains Maquinchao -a southern hemisphere version of continental.

The image below compares a "low" Maquinchao (80 meters compared to the actual 880), Viedma, which is a coastal city at the same latitude, and other two cities at similar latitudes. As you can see, there's nothing continental about Maquinchao.

A mere 16.3C range between the warmest and coldest months doesn't scream continental to me.
