The Great Lakes and the Caspian Sea are the largest lakes in the world and they happen to be at similar latitudes, Though the Caspian extends much further south.

the northern most point for the great lakes is 49N vs Caspian's 47N
the southern most point for the great lakes is 41N vs Caspian's 36N

total surface area of the Great lakes is 94,250 sq mi (244,106 km2)
Surface area of the Caspian Sea is 143,200 sq mi (371,000 km2)

Here are some of the cities on or near the shore of the Caspian

And some from the Great Lakes

2. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duluth,_Minnesota#Climate (46°47′12.98″N)

9. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cleveland#Climate (41°28′56″N)

So which one overall do you prefer, and which body of water do you think has a bigger effect on the local climate. How would it differ if they dried up? And how different would the Great lakes be if Michigan didn't exist (or some other state to increase surface area)?

Also to give you an idea of how much larger the Caspian Sea is than the Great lakes here is a map comparison.

The Caspian has more variation, but I prefer the wetter climate of the Great Lakes.

The Caspian cities in general tend to have rather gloomy winters. The Great Lakes are still a bit more sunnier in the winter.

After some long careful thinking I decided to pick the Caspian, mainly because it's winters are not as cold. However that being said I still think that the majority of the Caspian is to dry, except for the southern coast which is actually to wet/gloomy. But the Azerbaijani coast has a fairly nice climate, and Dagestan isn't too bad either.

As far as having the biggest effect I would also say the Caspian. For one it has the larger surface area, and it is the whole reason why Iran has a rainforest on the mountains along the Caspian southern coast. Though the Great Lakes also create a lot of lake effect snow. Though I don't know how much either moderates the temperatures of their coast lines.

Reading thelse great links it's really tough to decide, in some cases I prefer Caspian while I change my mind to Great Lakes. I voted for the Great Lakes, by a hair. I basked it on slightly preferring the climate there overall, plus the fact that it is located in the U.S and Canada, whereas the Caspian is located in some pretty authoritarian nations like Iran, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan and Russia. Again by a hair.

I live in California by the way if that means so anything and we don't have winters like that at all.

Caspian sea area beats the pants off any Great Lakes climate. Places like Rash and Gorman are light years ahead of places like Chicago and Detroit. It's a no Brainer for me
