I now understand why this is perplexing to the French as I did some research.
It seems that this insect does not venture that far into the north of France.
So it's very associated with the south of country (pays des cigales and all that jazz).
The distinctive ''song'' of this insect is entrenched in the minds of the French as something that is very typical of the south.
It's really only there that you hear it.
Exactly. You can only imagine how perplexed I was when I read from posters associating cicadas with humid subtropical or even continental climates, when they were advertised as a purely mediterranean thing in France. Any ad singing the praises of a Provençal product, be it Marseille soap, olive oil or calissons d'Aix, has cicadas in the background.
It would be good to see/hear cicada clips that posters have recorded. I've got some good clips, but need to figure out to post it onto here.
Cicadas are a special part of summer. Nothing says summers like cicadas going 24 hours a day and so loud they can be heard over the television or radio. I feel for those who don't have them during summer.
Right now you mostly hear crickets (since late April I think). Cicadas will start to sing about 2 weeks from now. I actually prefer the sound of crickets to that of cicadas. Nothing beats the chant of crickets on a calm evening. Contrary to cicadas, they can also be found in northern France.
One of the things I miss from my year in the South of China is the droning of cicadas... they were very loud there. It really was a soothing sound and if I was at home in the middle of the day, I would often take an afternoon siesta with their song putting me to sleep

Those are some beautiful pics. I would love to get that much snow in the winter. I've yet to see snow since moving to Denton.. which is ironic cuz when I lived further southwest in Texas we got a lot of snow, and now in north Texas, there was nothing last winter lol Last winter was so disappointing, that if I hadn't gone to Abilene after Christmas, I wouldn't have seen a flake.
