My accent is very mild, and I usually have a hard time understanding people from elsewhere in Yorkshire who speak with very broad Yorkshire accents. They pronounce coat like 'coyt' and pronounce water as 'watter' or 'wa'er' instead of 'warter'. I don't like it at all.
My sister has been in Middlesbrough for about 2 years now and she has picked up a definite Geordie twang to her accent.
Well, I have been living away from my home country now for maybe 19 months and only sometimes utter out a few words in an English accent, otherwise my accent is pretty solid.
There is no way that I would lose my accent, it's too strong and I am not making an effort to lose it.
