It's said the Midland dialect has some commonalities with Southern speech that Northern speech doesn't have.
Interesting and thanks for your very insightful reply

I certainly have noticed a slight southern tone to Midland speech, especially the southern portions of the states that have the Midland speech, which tends to be the lower Midwest and lower Northeast.

The mass gentrification has happened in only parts of the city; the median income of the city hasn't increased much at all, but it has gotten more unequal. Some of the biggest crime drops were in the most dangerous neighborhoods, and the drop was fast. Washington Heights went from a murder rate of 50 per 100k to about 6 in 10 years (more like 3 today), and in those ten years there was barely any demographic change (the drug gangs no longer sold on the street nor fought each other on the street). I don't think the police were responsible for all the decrease, but I suspect they contributed to some of the decline.
True, but that doesn't make him successful as a mayor. London mayoral elections aren't really decided by left vs right in my experience anyway, they're based on the person themselves not the political party they represent.

Pretty much anything below I-78 starts to not feel like North Jersey.

Middlesex does not seem like North Jersey to me. I don't like Middlesex...has a weird feel to it.

No way.

See, this is what I was talking about with far North Jersey folks thinking other parts of North Jersey are South Jersey.

Well it certainly does not feel like North Jersey. More of a transition zone I suppose.

Central Jersey (which feels more like South Jersey than North): Hunterdon, Somerset, Middlesex, Monmouth, and Mercer counties.

LOL. Hunterdon, Somerset, Middlesex, more like South Jersey?! This is exactly the madness I was talking about.

IDK about a transition zone. I actually think South Jersey and North Jersey are pretty discrete.

And I've been to all of NJ's counties. Though probably the one I've spent the least time in is Sussex. Only really briefly passed through. I've seen a lot more of Warren County.

Sounds about right, at least if there's no Central Jersey.
