Had a night of -26C/ in South Korea, and a midday temp of -13C at Macetown NZ.
I've had colder days in the mountains though. Coldest temp around here was -9C at a job one morning( about 40 km inland)

I live in the Southern Great Lakes right off Lake Michigan. I don't remember the exact temperature, but the wind chill was -85 degrees.

Sustained -65F (-54C) Interior Alaska November 2009 would have been about noon, walked about 3 1/2 miles to a neighbor and back (because no vehicles would work, it was too damn cold).

For a short period... probably about -70F letting the dog out at night.

Generally however I'm happy to be outside at anything above -40F as long as I'm dressed for it.

I've lived in warm climates my entire life, living my entire adulthood in California. The coldest temperature I personally have experienced was when I lived up in Sacramento 20 years ago. Lucky me lived there when the weird weather came through. I could remember right before Christmas the overnight temperature got down to the mid 20s F and ice had formed on the sidewalk outside my front door. Another thing I noticed was that the fronds on many of the palm trees had turned brown from the cold.

Wow -13C in New Zealand.. that must be close to a record. I know the coldest national record is something like -21.6C but most inhabited places don't see anywhere near that am I not mistaken?

That record is supposed to be from a place called Ophir according to what I've seen (though I only know it from reading online).

Yes, it is Ophir. I'm surprised -21.6C was recorded in NZ considering how oceanic it is and the fact that Ophir is not at a high elevation. There must be some temperature inversion happening for it to have gotten that cold. Even Vancouver has never gotten that cold!

The -13C was in Macetown, which was once a goldmining town of 3000 people. It was during the same cold spell in which Ophir broke the old record by 1C. I (we)went up there specifically because I thought it would be the coldest place close at hand (had to work that night). The river was frozen all the way from the turnoff at Arrowtown, so we didn't get wet any on any of the numerous crossings. I would like to know how cold it got that night. I once saw a mention of -28C there during the 1860's goldrush, but there is no way of knowing how accurate that would have been.

Even though cold lows are moderated by the sea when they reach NZ, the isobars can still sometimes almost descend vertically down to 65'S. If an intensifying high pressure follows, that will produce our coldest weather. 2 weeks or so of radiative frost and inversions, can produce some cold temps for us.

I don't know if anywhere gets colder than Ophir, but it is certainly the coldest inhabited place.
