During weekends people stay out very late (early), it's not unusual to hit the nightclub at midnight, and stumble out from an afterparty at 6-7am. During the summer some can stay out in small parks until morning and continue with the drinking.

I've been mugged once, and it was in a quiet poorly lit area and I was chewing on a hamburger, drunk, and not aware of the surroundings.
I was working in retail at the time, and we had to be in before the store opened to get everything ready. Some were there even earlier than I was. My current office job has a 9am start, so I usually get up at 7am, get dressed, have breakfast, brush my teeth, mess around with my hair for half an hour and then out of the house for the 8:30am bus. I could probably get up even later, but I like to give myself plenty of time to get ready.

I have considered cycling, since the new cycle lanes opened. Lots of people cycle to work these days. You see a lot more people cycling to work if there are going to be delays or cancellations due to events etc.

My earliest shift started at 5:15 at the airport. That was crazy. I probably weren't fully awake until we could go for breakfast at around 8:00. There were never anyone even on the motorway, or when I took the bus, every single passenger were going to the end station, which was the airport. 6:15 shifts were already somewhat busier on the roads, but not much.

I'm not a morning person at all. I wake up as late as possible, take a quick shower, and drink two cups of coffee while browsing the news and forecasts, brush my teeth and out of the door in 35-45 minutes after the alarm rang.

Many of the blue-collar NYC jobs "trades" start at 7-7:30 am. Office jobs start 8-9 am, but I'm told the subway doesn't get packed till 8 am, before then squeezing a bicycle is doable. 9 am at Grand Central Station is a one-way wave of office workers entering, and obviously these workers are getting to their office a bit after 9 am.

I'd agree that's the most pleasant combination. Some outer boro sidestreets aren't that busy. I dislike living near traffic noise more than having crowded sidewalks.

Is SF as busy as the major east coast cities?
Nowhere as busy as NYC, but similar or slightly busier than Philly or Boston. Gets lots of tourists and has lots of shops downtown, so the city center feels rather packed.

7 or 8 am here, but most blue-collar workplaces are outside the immediate centre, so the workers don't go via it. Universities open hardly ever before 9 am, and there's an ongoing debate if elementary and secondary schools would discontinue 8 am mornings completely. Governmental agencies outside customer service have discontinued working hours almost completely.

Thankfully, I've never been mugged or robbed even though I did live in a really bad neighborhood for a while. Maybe my size (6'1" and 220 pounds) had to do with that, or maybe the fact that I lived in the area, therefore I was a familiar face.

I did get burglarized one time while I wasn't home though. And I think someone tried to while I was home one time but I started making loud noise in the house and I think that scared them off.

My job starts at 8. Even by US standards that's fairly early. Most offices don't start until 8:30 or 9.

I am not a morning person either. I try to get up by 5:45, take a quick shower, and run out the door. The traffic is so bad here that I can't really afford to leave any later than 6:15. On days with light traffic, I can leave my house at 7 and get in before 8. Crazy difference some days.

Don't you drive like 50 miles to work or something? I think it's completely insane. It's one reason why I wouldn't like to live away from the city - some people have ridiculously long commutes.

Yeah 50 miles. I can't stand it and will probably end up moving closer to work within the next few years. Just not easy due to the cost of living here.
