Seems like a weird transition zone between the two regions.

Monroe County, PA went for Clinton. So many NYC transplants have moved there that the county is now blue, at least for presidential elections.

I think western Upstate NY is also a transition zone to the Midwest. You really see the culture change west of the Appalachians

Yeah, I've always thought the same thing.

New York City & Philadelphia are obviously Northeastern, but I'd class Buffalo & Pittsburgh more in the same Midwestern category as Cleveland, Chicago, or Detroit.

I'd say a Great Lakes region is a more coherent region the whole Midwest. Buffalo, Cleveland and Detroit have many similarities; Des Moines and Minneapolis less so
