Correct but the attitudes towards immigration still reflect to some degree the way things used to be. Few people in the US see an Indian family moving in down the street as "temporary". At least way fewer than do in most of Europe.
Temporary? As in they expect the Indian to move back to India eventually? Not familiar enough with continental Europe to compare.
"Immigrants" would be people born outside France, including foreignors.

I don't think people expect immigrants to come back to their native country, but more to stay, leech off society and eventually blow themselves up in a shopping mall or something.
The huge amount of Portuguese and Italians is surprising, you wouldn't expect so many immigrants from developed countries arriving to France, but I guess that shows the sad state of Southern Europe right now
That was true 100 years ago, but there isn't any area left of the US to settle and develop.
I would say most of the Great Plains and the Midwest is still very underpopulated, also the Delmarva peninsula is shockingly empty for its proximity to the biggest cities in the US
