The official high today was 74F. This is only the second December to exceed 72F in Lexington, the other being 1982.

What's interesting is that LEX has hit 80 in January, but never above 75 in December.

Up to 52 at midnight

Warmed steadily throughout the day from a low of 23 this morning to the high of 52 now.

First time since the 1st to reach 50. Only the third day over 45 this month.

Also the warmest temp this month.

Meanwhile, where I am never only made it to 40 after a Low of 14. Clouds and rain for much of the day. Still some snow though.

Northeast US is a lot more unstable in the first half of the year than the second

I wonder if Indianapolis and Chicago usually display that big a range of temperatures from each other; I am referring to Chicago's low temperature last Monday which was -13F, and the high temperature of 54F that Chicago saw today.

Here is a reason I think contributed. Deeper snowcover around Chicago that morning. Plus you are south more. (even not by much makes a difference)

Did a little digging for curiosity of the setup for that day in January 24, 1943 when LEX hit 80°

Here is morning of Jan 24th. Sure enough, a Colorado storm that is heading to the Great Lakes which pushed a warm southerly surge ahead of it. From this looks like LEX was north of a front in the morning but that quickly moved north and a global warming surge came in. (sorry, had to)

Here is the morning of the 25th. Storm over Lake Huron while a cold front pushes east over Kentucky. At this point still on the warm side. Must of been a warm night too? Texas colder than Eastern Ohio because they have the return cold flow with a Canadian High coming down.

Some of Vermont and New Hampshire is missing out on the warmth. Cold air pooled that hasn't been pushed away yet?
