Not here, and we are subject to tornados and hurricanes.

Where I grew up (Memphis, Tennessee), there were sirens on all the schools. We lived across the street from a school. And that thing would definitely knock you out of bed when it went off at night.

They "tested" them every Saturday at noon.

I think they were relics of the Cold War that also served as Tornado Sirens. I guess the response to either tornados or Russians was to run to the hall or bathtub & cover yourself with a mattress.

I haven't been back for over 20 years, but I think they're still there.

I live in northern Alabama (Huntsville - aka Rocket City - Home of the Saturn V Rocket that helped put the man on the moon...)

We have warning sirens here that are used whenever there is a threat.
I'm sure they've saved a good many lives circa 2011 when the state was covered in tornados...
A good friend of mine's ex-wife was killed 2 or 3 years ago when both she and her newly acquired husband #2 were caught in a tornado...

Yes in MN. Tested the first Wednesday of the month at 1 pm.

It's hard to hear it at my house when the house is closed up and the AC is on, though.

Luckily, when a real tornado warning is in effect, my phone and house alarm also give a blast. First time I heard my home alarm do that, it freaked me out, because I did not know it would do that!

We don't have them here. Weak tornadoes occur occasionally, but strong tornadoes are pretty rare. I don't think there have been any tornado fatalities in my parish (county) since the 1950's.

Yes, we have them here in the upper midwest.
Many years ago when I first moved to the midwest I was teaching at the university and the tornado sirens went off. I followed protocols and asked the students to move into the hallway for "shelter". One student said that nobody pays attention to the sirens because they go off all the time. Well, nothing happened that day, but a week later the sirens went off signaling a coming tornado that ripped right through the middle of our small city going through business, college, and residential neighborhoods. Where I live now the sirens only go off if there actually is an immediate or imminent threat.

I live in Texas now and we have them here as well. But I'd imagine that most of the East Coast does not have them, as well as the West Coast.

Where do you live? Do you have tornado sirens in your area?

Phoenix, and no. They can happen, but are very unlikely here, so they aren't necessary. However, this town could really use a proper drainage system for heavy rain, because it gets inundated quickly when it happens.

My area was just under a tornado warning a few minutes ago. A little odd that they didn't go off, despite going off when there was no warning in effect on 26 May this year.

Long Island has them though.

Really? I've lived on Long Island virtually my entire life and have never seen a reference to a tornado siren locally.
