I like mid loaded, with the center of winter to be around January 17.

Which kind of microclimate do you have in your area? Oceanic or continental/subarctic winters? I know Trondheim vary a lot depending on elevation.

I guess it's very common with extremely low diurnal variation though? Similar to our coastlines. Where I live it's more like 5 degrees between winter days and nights, in Trondheim more like 3?

Moderated oceanic. Since I am right in between the -3C and the 0C 24-hr mean for coldest month, the feel of winter can vary a lot from one week to the next and also from one year to the next.
But the snow is never far away in winter as the hills are so close.
Last winter we had 2 months of snow cover here in the lowland.

Diurnal range very small Nov-Jan, yes.

First, credit due from this thread for the "Front-Mid-Back" loaded thread idea here.

Second, awesome & interesting posts in here.

Third, a project I been working on thanks to wawa1992...

I just haven't had time to look specifically at what type of winter it was yet. Past 4 have been back loaded!

Take a look...

  • Past 4 Februaries in a row have been above normal with snowfall.
  • Last 16 Februaries only 6 were below normal
  • Last 6 of 9 Decembers have been above normal
  • November 2012 as you can see we broke a record for snowfall amount that month
  • I see many above normal snowfall months that had above normal temps
  • A lot more below normal temps in the 1960s & 70s.
  • Before February 2015, December 1989 had the lowest temp departure on record
  • We haven't had a back to back above normal November snowfall since 1967, 1968
  • We haven't had below normal temps in December since December 2010

Freeze the crap out of me in December and give me spring in February. December is noticeably milder than the other winter months so even if it's colder than normal the cold will have less bite, and by February the days are longer and everyone's longing for spring.
I agree. It can be cold and snowy at Christmastime because that somewhat adds to the holiday mood (though I'd rather have warm sunshine and a high of 83*F [28*C] ) but by the time February rolls around, I'm sick of winter and want, nay crave, highs in the 50s or warmer again. The sad part of it is that our winters here are becoming increasingly back-loaded, with the coldest month every year since 2013 being February.

I like cold and snow any time of the winter; we don't get enough cold as it is, and measurable snow only occurs every few years on average. But ideally, I would want winter to peak during the middle of the season.

Ideally I don't want to see above-freezing temps from October till April.

Also there should a great deal of snow which accumulates throughout the season at a roughly uniform rate.

If I had to pick one I guess I'd choose backloaded because it's a special treat when the cold/snow lingers into March and April when it's not ordinarily supposed to. Gives a good feeling.

Lol and you live in Austin. Good luck with that.

Blame that on the warm PDO and blob. Ever since that started they have been back loaded.

I prefer a combo of front and back. I want mid thru late December to get cold for Christmas, then can stay that way up to around early Jan. Then a mid thru late Jan thaw, then late Feb can get cold again into early March cause by then the sun strength works its magic on the cold and it just doesn't feel as bad. Cold in March is annoying if it hangs around, but the sun still drastically reduces its impact for me.
