Yep, I've seen plenty over the years, and they can still be warm days. Was camping at high altitude(700m) here a couple of years ago, with -1C at sunrise, and the temperature shot up to 21C by 10:30 am, but I wasn't able to record the midday temperature.

I think the safe rule for growing season is means 50°F/+10°C or higher, but past that, I would say generally that the lower the hardiness zone, the higher the avg temp for the first and last days

Here in Alicante, Spain at 38º 20'N latitude it never ends. In fact olives and oranges fully fructify in winter. I've never seen temperatures below freezing where I live, although in the 70's they had light freezes of -1ºC (30,2F). It is really strange to see temperatures under 5ºC even on the hardest cold spells; in this last 2015-2016 winter the biggest minimum was 4.5ºC (40,1F).

On the other hand in Netherlands, in my zone (Den Haag-Rotterdam) the growing season ends prior to the days with minimums under 0ºC simply because the maximums are too low, it ends in early-mid November and it starts in early April.
