This thread in a way is a part 2 of //www.city-data.com/forum/weath...black-sea.html thread. In the previous thread I was comparing the coastal regions of both places, but now I will be comparing the inland locations. The Inland Northwest will be defined as Eastern WA, Northern ID, Southeastern BC, Northeastern OR. Southern Russia will be defined as everything North of the Caucasus mountains (so everything between Anapa and Sochi don't count), South of Volgograd, west of Ural River (western Kazakhstan), and East of Ukraine's border.

Both of these regions are for the most part arid with cold cloudy winters and hot sunny summers but are also diverse enough to include a wide range of interesting climates.

mediterranean/subtropical climate

Walla Walla, WA vs Krasnodar, RUS

dry continental climate

Spokane, WA vs Volgograd, RUS

slightly wetter continental climate

Castlegar, BC vs Rostov-on-Don, RUS

wet continental climate

Stehekin, WA vs Vladikavkaz, RUS

mild summer continental climate
Pullman, WA vs Stavropol, Rus

cold winter summer semi-arid climate

Wenatchee, WA vs Astrakhan, RUS

mild winter semi-arid climate

The Dallas, OR vs Makhachkala, RUS

desert climate

Hanford Site, WA vs Atyrau, KAZ

mildish winter/hot summer climate

Kennewick, WA vs Armavir, RUS

My winners are
Krasnodar
Spokane
Rostov-on-Don
Vladikavkaz
Stavropol
Wenatchee
The Dallas
Hanford Site (it's more desert)
Kennewick (Armavir probably too humid)

Score: Inland NW(5) vs S. RUS (4)
winner Inland NW

however of all the cities Krasnodar is the one I like the most. (I wish more US cities would have sunshine data)

Using the -3C isotherm Castlegar is actually a snowy mediterranean climate, a good find I like that climate way better than the vast majority of continental climates!

My winners are:
Walla Walla
Volgograd
Rostov-on-don
Stehekin
Stavropol
Astrakhan
Tie
Atyrau
Armavir

That's 6-2 for Russia but places in southern BC such as kamloops, osoyoos, penticton etc. are the best ones.

Tough one... I will give the edge to the inland NW for generally higher sunshine in the summer.

Inland NW for Stehekin, which is my favorite climate in the country and one of my favorites worldwide.

Walla Walla is a very interesting climate. I didn't realize sunny Mediterranean climates could have winters like that.

If it was slightly cooler in July/August, and had more snow in winter, then I think it would be my new personal #1.

There are a lot of similar climates in inland NW, such as Osoyoos, but I don't know the sunshine data for that place.

Meh. What's the seasonal spread like? If the summer months are getting 300+ hours then it could be good.

Yes, cloudy winter, sunny summer.

Just checked, Kelowna averages 298 hrs in July, Penticton 289 hrs in July,
both just north of Osoyoos.

They both average about 1950 hrs for the year,
so I'd say Osoyoos is similar...maybe an even 2000 hrs
( or 2200 hrs using US sunshine hours threshold).
