Just replace them all with Lombardy or black poplars, or lindens and it would instantly look so much better.

Well you can't plant the same species all over the place, can you?

There you have both: https://www.google.fi/maps/@60.43759...7i13312!8i6656

That looks far superior to the previous image. Pines always make an area look nicer, and the fewer birches the better.

Why grow them when there's so many better alternatives?

I like all vegetations...especially ones you can eat.

I like Evergreens in Winter, Delicious in Summer.

I've never eaten a tree before. I'll have to give it a try this summer

How does an ash or linden look better in winter?

Well, linden and maple are the most common trees planted here, birches are relatively few.

Forests are of course full of them.

Because they have fuller trucks and branches, which also attracts a lot of birds and squirrels. Birches are just thin and spindley throughout. I wouldn't say that any of them are particularly aesthetic in the winter, but at least trees such Ash, Linden, Maple, Willow, etc. Are nice to look at throughout the rest of the year.

I'm not a fan of sclerophyllous vegetation in general, I prefer tall trees.

Yeah they're pretty bad, especially when they interrupt otherwise open landscapes, like in Scotland or Massif Central for example. Stuff like this:

Forest farming can lead to hideous landscapes, especially when trees are young.

I don't mind birches. I think they compliment pines pretty well and make predominantly evergreen forests less monotonous with their white bark.

Not necessarily.

Anyway, birches are not of my favourite trees, but neither do I have anything against them.
