I hope Imgur lasts forever otherwise all this work posting images and loops is for nothing. If they are gone in the future, just message me, I have them saved.
WHOA! Nice catch. Made me get back on the PC. Don't think we call it Lake Effect snow though. It's rotating shortwaves around the big Upper Level Low (my favorite atmospheric feature)
But definitely cool to see snow showers down south in Mid March
That's probably the old primary low, that shifted most of its energy to the coastal. Lake effect is bigger early in the winter when the Great Lakes are warm, and severely cold air, is in subzero to single digits, is pouring over it. Now I'm guessing it's air in the teens and 20's blowing over a lake that's probably 32°to 37°.
15.6" fell yesterday. Had March 14 been a month, it would have had more snow than November, January and February. Yesterday's fall was the 4th highest March daily snowfall and the 15th highest daily snowfall overall.
Since 2016, we've had the 12th highest October daily snow, 3rd highest November, 10th highest December, 2cd highest February and 3rd highest march.
As of 8am, we were up to 22.2". It has continued snowing since. Perhaps 30" from this storm?
Ridiculous. Moscow at a latitude of 55° N is experiencing Spring while we at the borderline "humid subtropical" can't get out of the 20's ° F in mid-March. The landscape here looks like the Arctic in the middle of winter.

Sucky climate.
That's because North America is a flawed climate. I swear only in Northeast US can you get snow and cold weather this late into March at 40° latitudes. Its a pure disaster, if Upstate NY was located at the same laittude in Spain, we wouls be having 70s and 80s right now
Thanks all. What a storm! Sounds as though most, if not all of you, kept the power on though. That is a blessing.
I guess I was right not to brave that mess to drive north in the past few days. Gave up on the 'window' too to try to make between yesterday's system and what is next coming down the pike ... Friday you say, Cambium? how bad is this next one going to be?.
Even in NC is still too cold to melt off the bit of snow we got so early morning driving could be treacherous and I imagine the roads up north could be worse still. I do wish the arctic chill would ease a bit again. Talking to my son last night in central southern BC (Kootenay region) though, he said this was a miserable, cold, incredibly long winter there too and they normally have good sunny, snowy but not super cold winters (which by now would be just a memory anyway) so if they are not out of it yet, I would bet we still have a way to go since the jet stream is still dropping down and routed over them first.
(p.s. I can't rep you enough, Cambium .. but I kept trying. You are not the only one who did very valuable work in this thread either. I don't have tv here right now .. and going to umpteen sites trying to figure out the real picture is a lot of work even if you know just where to go to get the best info to put together the real and best picture. Had I not had you/these threads, I might have made a really dangerous mistake and set out on the road at a very bad time.)
