As far as I know, anything much above 65 Degrees in Barrow is warm enough to challenge at least a few record highs; the all time record high for Barrow is 79 Degrees if I remember correctly.

No surprise really for Texas. While open to sweeps of northern cold fronts, there's still the warm Gulf of Mexico + southern latitude to help in moderation. In reality, it's just the northern areas of the state (from the Panhandle on east) that truly get the wild temp swings; the southern half of the state isn't much different from much of the coastal Southeast, and includes the RGV (one of the only viable places in the US outside of Florida where coconut palms are cultivated).
Also, note how the division between the "blue" and "yellow" in swings pretty much follows the shape of the US coastline. You can see that the "yellow" extends much farther south in Texas than anywhere else in the US... and those areas of Texas in question are also farther inland than farther east locales at the same latitude.
