I suppose I'm more focused on the days since that's when I was awake. I only care about the nights when it's too hot and interestingly cold in the winter. A spring night in the 50s, while above average, is pretty forgettable. It's more noticeable having to wear a jacket and turn on the heat in late May.

Yeah, I suppose in terms of feel I can see where you're coming from.

Btw it's 84 F here still with a 74 F dew point at 10 PM. How's that for a night that's too hot? Lol.

As I said, the cooler days are more noticeable to me than the warmer nights when I'm asleep.

While there were fewer below average days, there were more that had the larger anomalies from average.

May 7th: 15 degrees below average
May 8th: 13 degrees below average
May 13th: 18 degrees below average
May 22nd: 10 degrees below average
May 25th: 13 degrees below average
May 29th: 14 degrees below average (and the high was at midnight...the majority of the day was in the 50s)
May 30th: 13 degrees below average

There were only 4 above average days that had an anomaly over 10 degrees.

My point is all the cool days didn't drag the average down quite as much you'd expect because it was only the days not nights that were below average. Our average max was about 4°F below normal, min 1°F above normal.

Also, Are you saying this is a typical occurrence where 3 or 4 days is the reason for a departure? I quickly looked for May only and didn't find any. May 2013 came close but I hesitate using that month because it looks normal even with only the 7 hot days. I don't think we see this scenario much, would be an interesting thing to look up though.
no, this is an extremely strange May. Good example of where average doesn't show the full picture. Feb 2016 is another really variable month where with lots of warmer than average days and one 27°F colder than average day. This May is skewed; three way warmer than average days, and lots of moderately but not extremely below average day.

The same logic applies to warm months with a short cold snap. Not doubting that at all. Can you think of any recent examples?

February 2016? If I'm not mistaken, October 2015 also had a fairly intense cold snap mid-month in an otherwise warm month?

February 2016 was the best example, a very warm month with a mammoth cold wave in the middle. Also March 2016 is a good example, it was one of the warmest months on record but had a magisterial cold blast at the start of it

It's easy to remember the weather of climates much more interesting than my own.

Yeah February 2016 was a wacky month. That cold blast was pretty intense. Then there were 9 days over 50 F...4 at or above 60 F.

Mid-October 2015 had a few cold nights...close to record breaking. But the days were nothing to write home about.
