I heard on the radio news station (KNX AM 1070) that the maximum temperature at Death Valley today was 130 degrees F (54.4 degrees C).

It should be verified/official by tomorrow. If so, that is the hottest it has been there in 100 years. I have been waiting for over 25 years for that place to hit 130 degrees F! As us weather enthusiasts know, it did go as high as 129 degrees F (58.5 degrees C) several times in the last 20 or so years.

The accuweather website does list 130 degrees as the maximum temp there for today.

You have to wait a couple hours until the official numbers come out.

But according to the OBS, it reached at least 128 at 2pm. https://www.wrh.noaa.gov/mesowest/ti...ap&raw=0&w=325

The 128 looks weird because it was a random jump of 7f from the previous hour. Then the next hour drops back down to 125, and then goes back up to 127 at 4pm. Those fluctuations would be normal on cloudy or partly cloudy days, but they're kind of weird on a bone dry cloudless day.

Anyways, if verified, it would be the first 130 reading ever reliably recorded in modern times. I don't believe the 134 reading from the early 1900s.

Needs to be verified but there are several media outlets reporting it. It would be the earth's hottest temperature in about 89 years.

Imagine if this current heatwave happened in the third or fourth week of July, we may be talking about tying or exceeding the all-time high temperature record. If today's temperature is confirmed, it would lead credence to the 134F all-time high temperature in July 1913.

I believe the thermometer at the ranger station when we were there once was reading 126, definitely a dry kind of heat. Can't even imagine what 130 would feel like, probably a little warmer than 126.

Congratulations Death Valley!

Of course this would happen the one week there are near-100 degree temperatures along the entire west coast from Seattle to San Diego.

September is "fire season" when the Santa Ana winds arrive (even more so than today). So September is no relief.

I dont stop going to the beach until November.

I've been in Death Valley when it was 128F, if the Bun Boy thermometer has any validity.

Yes, the Santa Ana winds begin each year around Sept. 20-25. Only a little more than one month away. Which means the most dangerous fires are in October and November. Let's hope it's not too bad this year.

I have also been to the beach in early November; it can be warm there even in that month.

What did 128 degrees feel like? An oven?!

The hottest I've ever felt was 109, and that felt like an oven. Stepping out from an air conditioned building, it hits you like a wall of heat, like you just opened an oven.

I wonder what 130 feels like.
