Because I am a bonsai enthusiast, I need to keep an eye on the weather to adjust my drip systems watering my 70+ trees. In winter, I also have to pay attention to the weather when it gets close to freezing, bring in my tropical
trees and turn the heat on in the greenhouse for others that are not cold hardy.
Its a hobby. Got into it from a teen. So as a teen I knew cities of LA, Phoenix, and The State of Florida had warmer winters but I also thought Atlanta did as well. Wasn't really the case though, I'd watch the evening news and Atlanta forecast for the next day would be a struggle to get out the 40s. What can you do its winter....oh but wait a minute, why is Tampa going to be in the 70s at the same time?? Isn't GA very close to FL? So those questions gave me a preference in weather(warm) and got me interested learning more about weather.
Very interesting the weather is! How you can have fairly dry but tropical Honolulu then not too far away very wet Hilo. Or rather Kailua-Kona better example, just as dry as Honu, less than 80 miles from Hilo, Kailua receives 17 inches of rain vs 126 inches of rain in Hilo. Europe much more mild than similar latitudes in the Northern Hemisphere. The Southern Hemisphere how it differs from the Northern. Destructive, violent tornadoes in the US. South Africa is more mild than mostly hot and humid. West Coast of Japan is very snowy! Etc Etc. Just a very interesting subject to me.
I have no professional interest at all and it is not even really a hobby, but weather is very important to my mood and sense of well-being. Too many hot and sunny days actually depress me and make me VERY grumpy, but a cold crisp sunny day exhilarates me. However, strangely enough, I can handle an entire month (and probably more) of no sunny days at all just fine.
Just a hobbyist. I made my first notes on the weather in 1991. Nowadays I no longer take notes, as much more versatile and accurate information is available on the Internet. But I still have an interest in the weather.
