I always get a movie like sunrise on this one spot in my morning drive, i could see miles from the vantage point. This morning i saw blankets of fog stretching miles away.
Frost again this morning, 4th of the year. Air temp reached 34° around 6 in Plum. The color of the trees has amplified crazy in the last 2 days. We went from near peak to near past in like 2 or 3 days lol
What does frost mean? What's the difference between frost and freeze?
I take it freeze means the freezing point of pure water and below that. How about frost?
However I still see liquid water on the ground when the weather is 0°C or slightly below freezing in İzmit.
This winter, I was seeing liquid water on the ground when the temp was -1.8°C in İzmit ( the temperature was going between -1.5°C and -1.8°C in a cloudy weather when I was outside)
Frost is simply ice crystals on objects that dropped to freezing while air temp is above freezing. Freeze is just that, air temps at freezing.
There's other factors in what you saw over the winter... Obviously water freezes at 0C but if you got sun hitting it from previous hours or day, or a warm surface underneath, or the thickness/depth of the water itself, or winds, or running water, it's not going to freeze right away even at -2C. If it stayed -2C for long period than you'll start to see the top glaze over.
Do an experiment next time its -2C. Take a cup of water, empty it on the ground. See what it does after some time. Then find another area and try it there. Or... take a thermometer and place it on the ground first before the experiment.
Common misconception is "air" temp and "surface" temp. Your surface may have been above 2C for all we know.
Official low for Plum, PA was 30°. Damn, really wanted 20s

Nice. You can feel the season transition to Fall coming...
Poor trees, 60s and 70s with sun again during the day next several days, they'll be like WTF, again!? lol
North continues being well above average, cold fronts have been only bringing NYC to less above average but still well above... same thing every where up north, meanwhile down here well below average nights beginning again and a below average high today... makes no ****ing sense... Atlanta has two sub 60 highs forecast per twc... NYC zero when their average high should be below 60.
The very welcome cold front has made its arrival in full force here! Low of 46 this AM. With crisp, chilly mornings that give way to pleasant, warm afternoons, there's something for everyone. What's not to love?
Like many of you in the East, we had a stretch of below average temps during August and early September (i.e. - high in the 60s on Sept. 11) And around September 15, it was like someone flipped a switch back to summer. We roasted for a few weeks before normalcy eventually reclaimed its rightful place. I sincerely hope that we are finished with summer for good - not to say that there won't be some low 80s here and there, but I hope the upper 80s/90s are gone until next May!
I'm very grateful that we have avoided the disaster that was October 2016, which was zero rainfall and every day in the upper 80s or low 90s. The rainfall we received from TS Nate helped us out a lot; we had been several weeks without rain prior to that. Granted, 11 of the 17 days of October have had well above average temperatures, which has our monthly average to date inflated. But I hope that, if the models hold, the coming cold (or at least average) in the second half of October will help to mitigate that, and tick that average downward. I still believe we'll finish October SLIGHTLY above average, but nothing like 2016, which had freakishly hot temps.
A few trees have begun to color up, even this far south. I've seen some sycamores near peak (they usually have reliable and long lasting color). The occasional sweetgum is showing color - though I will say that it has been a very wet summer, and sweetgums do not do well with overly wet weather - they wilt and drop leaves early. Maples are still green, but lush and healthy-looking, and should start reddening in a few weeks. Oaks, obviously, have a long way to go - they are the last to show color, no matter where you are. This extended stretch of warm, sunny days and chilly nights is exactly the recipe for optimum fall color.
