Where would you rather be today weatherwise (September 10, 2017)?
A) Naples, Florida: projected to be in the direct path of landfall of major hurricane Irma (You would be in a safe building away from the storm surge but trapped without power until you can safely leave to return home).
or
B) The Amundsen-Scott Base Research Station at the South Pole (You can stay indoors until the next flight out).
South Pole. I would not like to be in the path of one of the strongest hurricanes ever registered. Better stay inside the Amundsen Scott Station without any weather related problem.
I can't believe that any rational person would choose the path of a hurricane.
I was in Mobile, Alabama when Hurricane Camille struck. I was on high ground so there was no danger from water, but the winds were so high that I was afraid to walk ten feet to my car. There was a power pole that was waving a bit and I would have liked to move my car.
The worst of the hurricane was on the Mississippi coast. People were in large buildings having "hurricane parties." When the storm subsided, the buildings were gone.
The next morning I drove through Mobile. There were huge trees that had been uprooted by the winds. It was scary to see those trees with their roots exposed lying everywhere.
