Santa Maria is light years away to be climatically similar to Malaga. Malaga has a Csa climate, Santa Maria a Csb one. That's a completely different climate! The summer temps of Santa Maria (highs) equal the ones of Malaga in mid-late April ...

Of course my vote goes to Malaga, one of the best climates of the world and the best on Europe in my opinion.
Of course it does.

Of course Santa Maria. A cool summer Mediterrean climate>a hot summer one. Santa Maria, differently from other California coastal city is better in everything: it has a lower absolute minimum, a lower mean annual minimum, has cooler minima year round, lower maxima during summer (important with a city with a crappy winter like Santa Maria) and a lower absolute maximum. The only thing that is better in Malaga is precipitations. Anyway for a vacation I would of course go to Malaga, I prefer warm water over a cool/cold one.

Santa Maria for the warmer winters, and it's only a quick drive inland for some real summer.

Malaga. I wouldn't like Santa Maria's year-round chilly nights.

Malaga.
In spite of it being hotter than Santa Maria, it is wetter and has a greater seasonal variation.
