I looked at the model and the reason for this cold snap is a trough over Eastern Aus/Tasmania, strong S/SE air flow there as the Jet Stream moved north, also you can see there are an strong high pressure south of New Zealand, should have some to do with all this.
When looking at 850hpa temperatures you can see exactly what happening, it is colder over SE Aus than at about 65N over the Southern Ocean(at 1500m).
After a couple of more hot days including some tropical rainfall, we got the new cold shot. And today the max is only 21ºC with drizzle and southestern wind (wich are our analog of the US northeasterns, but without snow and of counter-clockwise direction ).
So, quite a change! This australian pattern continues during this summer.
A very unusual wet and windy summers day as the remnants of ex-Tropical Cyclone Joyce moved over Perth today with persistent moderate to heavy rainfall all afternoon and evening. The central Perth gauge has recorded 55mm since about 9am, 5 times the long term average for the month and the second wettest January day on record in Perth with more rain still to come.
Some coastal suburbs of Perth have totals approaching 100mm, my own home gauge 3km from the coast has so far recorded 86mm and counting!

A Southeaster. I'd love to experience that. I might lose my bearings at first. lol
Looks like Australia's cold is coming to an end this week. I see warm anomalies starting mid week.
The highlands experienced 27C warmth and 0C chilliness (with snow flurries) in the same week. And yet they say Australia has a boring climate.
Wow, Awesome. I don't know enough to comment on it but I do know there's so many misconceptions out there about climates for certain locations so I wouldn't doubt it. Maybe too much "generalization" goes into people assuming? Although the other question is.. How many times does Australia see 27C and 0C in a day or week? What region? (I would think the south would?)

I've heard the same said about NZ, yet it can get 27C and 0C in the same day.
