Too impressive not to start a thread for this one. Please post forecasts and OBS during this outbreak in here. It will be fun to look back on.. Thank You.
Here's the current setup this morning. 850mb temps (5000') and Upper Heights. Polar Vortex south of Hudson Bay and extremely cold temps at the mid levels of the atmosphere. -20C over Michigan this morning.
As this trough swings out, another reinforcing shot comes later in the week.
And here's the anomaly of this mornings mid level air mass. Play the loop with the slider with link and see how this one shifts out and then another one dives into the U.S for end of week
Nothing too noteworthy quite yet at my location in terms of records, but it did make it to -7 (-22) this morning, a full 24*F (13*C) below the monthly average low and the coldest temperature since Dec 2016
Yesterday (25 Dec) brought the first frigid (sub 15 [-9]) high and the first subzero (-18 or lower) low of winter 2017-18, at 14/-4 for yesterday's high and low. A marked change from the above average temperatures in place for much of October, and IMO certainly not a welcome one.
Curious what NWS Burlington Vermont has to say.. They mention the sun wont have much affect. 494dam!

We begin the decent into the arctic abyss today as reinforcing
arctic boundary across the Ottawa Valley this morning makes its way
southeasterward into our region.
given temperatures in the teens/low 20s this afternoon and
large "fluff" factor (snow- to-liquid ratios in excess of 20:1),
but could see a brief burst of heavy snow in central VT. That
said, would anticipate a coating up to 2" of snowfall this
afternoon, especially across central VT and the central Green
Mtns as the bndry moves through. May see a quick dusting at BTV
as well.
Low-level CAA continues tonight with NW winds diminishing to
5-10 mph. Looking for skies to become mostly clear as lake
effect bands push well to our south with the veering low-level
flow. Should see plenty of sun on Wednesday, but it will be relatively ineffective given -26C at 850mb and 1000-500mb thickness values around 491-494dm. NW winds increase to 10-20
mph during the day Wednesday.
Above combination of factors set up wind chill values 15 to 25
below, beginning around midnight tonight and lasting thru
Wednesday (before getting worse Wed night). Issued a Wind Chill
Advisory for the nrn Adirondacks - including all of Franklin NY
county - and VT`s Northeast Kingdom from 06Z Wed thru 00Z Thu,
where 20 below threshold will most likely be met. 2-meter air
temperatures tonight will range from zero at BTV to the low
teens below zero in the nrn Adirondacks and far nern VT. For
Wednesday, only looking at highs in the single digits above zero for most of central and nrn VT and nrn NY, and locally near to slightly below zero for highs in the nrn Adirondacks and in the colder spots of the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont.
