The year 2017 was both warmer and wetter than normal in Indianapolis, with an annual average temperature of 55.6 F, this ties the year 2017 for the 7th warmest year on modern record since record keeping began back in 1872, the annual average temperature using the 1981-2010 normals is 53.1 F; 2017 ranked as the 25th wettest year on modern record, with an annual precipitation total of 47.45 inches; average for the 1981-2010 period is 42.44 inches.
We had 2 record warm months this year - February and April.
Last winter was the second mildest on record, and it was followed by the fourth warmest spring. But of course, 2 of the 3 below average months in 2017 had to occur during summer, making it the second coolest June-August of this decade behind 2015. So it was basically the blandest possible kind of year in terms of seasonal variation. We also finished with the second lowest snowfall total for a calendar year. There were a couple periods of good thunderstorm activity in the spring, while the summer was disappointing.
We don't have all the data complied yet for Alaska in 2017, but it will be interesting to see and compare to 2016, which was phenomenally warm.
From the Alaska Climate Research Center:
"The temperature of 2016 was the warmest by a large margin, 1.5°F warmer than the previous record holder (2014). While 1.5°F is not a large deviation for a single station on a monthly basis, it is a very large value for an area as large as Alaska and for a whole year."
